Lee and Helena Blackman were guests at Daniel Boys' late night cabaret at the Trafalgar Studios on Friday 4 March. Daniel has been appearing, with Julie Atherton, Alexia Khadime and Lee William-Davis, in Ordinary Days at the same venue (which I would strongly recommend you seeing if the run wasn't ending on 5 March), and this was the last of his Friday night cabarets.
Trafalgar 2 is a lovely, intimate venue, seating just under 100, and Daniel chatted with great warmth and wry humour, performing songs from his first 10 years in the business - from the shows he's been in over the years and from his album, So Close. Helena was his first guest, singing Like Love from Charlie Girl, and then Somewhere from West Side Story with Daniel.
Lee joined Daniel on stage towards the end of the set and after reminiscing briefly about how they met on the Any Dream Will Do TV programme, sang 'More Than Words' (from Lee's second album, Nothing Else Matters) together - I love how this track works as a duet and their voices blended wonderfully - so simple, but utterly beautiful, and perfect for this small space.
It was a brilliant evening's entertainment, and special mention must also go the 'ridiculously talented' (to steal Daniel's words) Douglas Whyte, pianist extraordinaire!
