Press night for the West End Men's strictly limited West End season at the Vaudeville Theatre was on Monday 3 June, a week into the run, and was attended by the usual quota of critics, friends and colleagues from the industry, and many fans of the individual performers or simply of musical theatre itself.
The show was given a fantastic reception on the night, reflected in the public response on social media that night and throughout the run, but the critics for the most part sharpened their pens and gave it a rather rougher ride - their main complaint seemingly that a showcase of West End men in the home of West End men was rather like bringing coals to Newcastle, rather than any lack of talent from the men involved.
Speaking personally, as a passionate fan of theatre, musical or otherwise, the opportunity to watch some top class West End talent (both the Men and the fabulous musicians who shared the stage with them) perform original arrangements of so many wonderful musical theatre numbers was a rare pleasure. You can see setlists on the main show page.
In the interviews recorded at the after-show party, you can hear the rasp in Lee's voice from the throat infection he had battled almost since the show opened. It was a shame for him that he wasn't at his peak vocally on this night of all nights, but that's showbiz, and from an audience perspective he more than delivered.
Lee's interview is embedded below for your viewing pleasure, but first a few photos... a couple from rehearsals, two versions of a very similar shot, one from Anne Stern of the line-up from the first half of the run, the second a production shot of the alternative line-up, and finally a few more production shots.
