Lee was honoured to be the headline guest at a special show to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign on 10 December 2009. Lincoln Cathedral was the stunning (if extremely cold!) setting for this 'Spirit of Christmas' concert, which also featured performances from Hollie Steel, Stephen Holloway, the Lincoln Orpheus Male Voice Choir and the St Hugh's School Choir.
Lee's two sets included songs from his first two albums, the eponymous Lee Mead and Nothing Else Matters, a couple of musical theatre numbers and, of course, some Christmas songs.
I was particularly delighted that two of the songs he'd sung recently at An Evening With Tim Rice in Monaco - Anthem and A Winter's Tale - were included, I had been so envious of those lucky enough to hear them on that occasion.
And indeed, Anthem was a total show-stopper for me... it's a song with which I have a long history and hearing Lee sing it for the first time, in that setting where his voice soared to fill the vast vaulted space, was both breath-taking and incredibly emotional. His final number - When A Child Is Born - sung in the gentle glow of candles held by the children's choir, was a beautiful and fitting end to the evening.
