We Will Rock You first show .. 2 June 2023
We Will Rock You - London Coliseum, Summer 2023 News broke earlier today that musical theatre stars Lee Mead and Brenda Edwards will lead the cast of the new production of iconic musical We Will Rock You at the London Coliseum this summer. Lee will play Khashoggi, with Brenda Edwards as Killer Queen, a role she previously played in both the UK tour and during the show's record-breaking Dominion Theatre run. They will be joined by Ian McIntosh (Galileo Figaro) and Elena Skye (Scaramouche), reprising their roles from the UK tour, with further casting to be announced. Opening on Friday 2 June, the show will run for a strictly limited 12-week season, ending on Sunday 27 August.

Director Ben Elton said: "I'm thrilled that the wildly talented Brenda Edwards and Lee Mead are starring in We Will Rock You. They're guaranteed to blow your mind and after that they'll blow the roof off!"

It will be the third time in 12 months that the pair have worked together, after Chicago last summer (sadly curtailed by Brenda's broken ankle) and Snow White last Christmas, and they're clearly looking forward to it. Brenda commented: "I'm delighted to be stepping back into the shoes of the legendary Killer Queen and this time at the iconic London Coliseum! I can't wait to work with Ben again, the hugely talented Lee Mead and the rest of the amazing company." While Lee said: "I'm so excited to be joining the cast of We Will Rock and can't wait to bring Queen's legendary songs back to the London stage. We start rehearsing in April bring it on!"

UPDATE 14/06/2023: The reviews are in! Be warned, I think they're even worse than they were back in 2002, but the show proved itself immune back then and the criticism is aimed almost universally at the show/book rather than the performers, so have a delve if you dare! I've also penned (er, typed!) my own first impressions which, while not entirely uncritical, focus rather more on what I enjoyed than picking more holes in the already lacy plot.

Tickets, as is the norm with the Coliseum's summer musicals, are at premium prices, though cheaper options are available in the higher levels of this beautiful venue, and there are Rush tickets at TodayTix (available 10am daily for that day's show(s) - you'll need the app) and it's also worth keeping your eye on TheatreMonkey for news of any special offers (there was an excellent deal for some shows in June, nothing yet announced for later dates).
