SERIES 30, EPISODE 2 - A CHILD'S HEART, Part 2Paul Unwin's hand on the tiller was again very evident in the second part of this taut and emotional Series 30 opener - use of the original opening titles, merged with footage from today's ED, set the scene very well for an episode which harked back to the days when Casualty was very much a drama rather than a soap. The depiction of a department operating every day under almost intolerable pressure is as relevant now as it was then and today's cast did full justice to the character-driven drama handed to them by Paul Unwin's script.
With rather less nursing to do in this episode, Lofty's almost constant presence by Charlie's side might have become somewhat mawkish, but it never did - Lee pitched the emotion just right. I hope we will see very much more of this 'grown-up' Lofty in the weeks and months to come.
I can't help thinking that next week's return to 'business as usual' in terms of writing and direction may be an anti-climax after this for fans of the show, both new and old. But let's hope the shine rubs off on to the episodes that follow...Synopsis: Tensions rise in the Emergency Department, as events spiral out of control. Charlie is still in jeopardy after his heart attack and the whole team work hard to save him, as gang crime threatens to spill in to the hospital corridors. It's down to Jacob to stop the violence spreading. Dylan is still suffering from mental health issues and acknowledges that he needs help. Max and Zoe kiss, although it's clear that he still hasn't forgiven her. Louise is fundamental in saving Sarah and Mark's baby, and after taking inspiration from Duffy she comes round to the idea of becoming a nurse again.
