This week Casualty seemed to be showing off its strong drama roots, a hard-hitting topical storyline, hands-on medical emergencies, real human drama... more of this please, BBC!
And while from a staff perspective, the spotlight was mainly on Connie and Jacob and their unlikely romance (the soap not entirely abandoned, it seems!), Lofty was there in the mix and thankfully the script writers are being fairly consistent with his character, his pacifist convictions again to the fore, and for once his nursing skills untroubled by the usual clumsiness. Nice work, Mr Mead.
Synopsis: Terror strikes when a room full of racist supporters are attacked and are brought in to the Emergency Department - where the attack continues. As staff are evacuated, a petrified Alicia is left alone in the hospital to treat a patient. She decides to do a risky procedure and it's a success, impressing Connie but making Lily utterly jealous. Jacob puts his life on the line for Connie and manages to get the attacker to hand over their gun, but just as the police walk in Jacob is shot. Connie saves his life and the experience brings them closer together. Jacob is hailed a hero, but feels like a victim.
Finally, there are some screencaps and, with my ever grateful thanks to the anonymous editor and my apologies to those of the cast who have hit the cutting room floor, here's the 'Meady bits' edit!
