'Top That!', celebrating the work of the legendary composer, Irving Berlin, was recorded by BBC Radio 2 for their Friday Night Is Music Night series and was subsequently broadcast on Friday 7 September.
The orchestra opened both halves and closed the first with wonderful overtures, while each singer charmed us with four solos during the evening, including many of Berlin's best-known songs, before joining voices for the finale. Lee, so handsome in black tie, sang his solo numbers in a meltingly rich voice that caressed the ears and soothed the soul. They were:
Always - not a song I knew well, but I think my favourite of the night
Count Your Blessings - with a gorgeous, soft smile lighting his face as he sang "I think about a nursery and I picture curly heads"
Let's Face the Music and Dance - complete with a few dance moves
and, somewhat bizarrely for a hot June night - White Christmas!
There's No Business Like Show Business - full company
